FREE Agriculture Business Workshop – San Angelo @ Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at San Angelo

Join us for a FREE agriculture business workshop in San Angelo, Texas.  This workshop is a one-day workshop designed for military veterans, beginning farmers and ranchers, individuals with disabilities, and anyone interested in starting an agriculture business.

Workshop sessions will include:

  • Intro to Business Planning
  • Possibilities for farming/ranching with a disability
  • Financial funding sources for farming/ranching
  • Marketing Resources
  • Resources to support agriculture business operations ​

Produce Food Safety for Military Veterans – Rosenberg @ Fort Bend County AgriLife Extension Office

Are you a military veteran who is farming? What better way to continue your service to our nation than providing high quality food to your community.

Join us for a 1-day hands-on training to learn the rules, regulations, and safe practices for produce. These regulations can be overwhelming to find, learn, and put into practice. This training will break them down and teach producers how to implement produce safety into their operation.

  • Registration is FREE
  • Open to military veterans
  • Receive a complimentary tool kit (digital food thermometer included)
  • Learn about Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)
  • Participate in a mock farmers market booth inspection
  • Network with other veterans
  • Lunch is included

Hands-On High Tunnel Part 2 @ ARTillery Avenue Farm

Join Grow North Texas at ARTillary Avenue Farm in Hillsboro, TX to learn about season extension techniques, hear from other farmers actively utilizing season extension methods, participate in farmer/provider discussions, and have the opportunity to assist with completion of a 30×96 Zimmerman Gothic Arched high tunnel. This workshop will also address creating a plan for sustainable on-farm enterprises through goal setting conversations and identifying resources that assist with whole farm planning and sustainability (financial and farmer).

Lunch is included, but feel free to bring any other snacks you might need. Please bring a water bottle and wear weather-appropriate clothing.

Participants will also have the opportunity to learn about the GROW North Texas Farm Allies program that provides technical assistance to farmers. 

ARTillery Avenue Farm is owned and operated by Rachel Mims, a military veteran who understands the need for nature and art therapy for her fellow veterans. She has combined both of these in ARTillery Avenue Farm. 

GROW North Texas is a nonprofit organization based in Dallas that works to connect North Texans to food, farms, and community to create a sustainable, secure regional food system that enriches the land, encourages economic opportunity through food and agriculture, and provides equitable access to healthy, nutritious food for all residents. 

This workshop is made possible by funding from the USDA Office of Partnerships and Public Engagement and Southern Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education (SARE).

Understanding soil health is understanding the basics of organics.

In this hands on workshop, Co-Founder James Jeffers, will discuss

  • understanding the basics of soil health
  • organic matter management
  • compost and plant based teas
  • how to scout for diseases and pests
  • weed management
  • beneficial insects that help protect your crops.

Be prepared to get your hands dirty and bring your gloves.

This class is great opportunity for both beginner and seasoned growers!

For an accurate participant count and so we are better prepared, please be sure to register for the class.

After class, stay and have lunch with us that will be provided by Sheep Dog Assistance.

The class will be 2 hours of classroom time and 1 hour of outdoor hive inspections (of live beehives). Some protective suits will be available. If you have your own suit, please bring it with you.

Space limited to 10. Veterans (and their families) have priority.

Veterans and their immediate families can attend for FREE.

Non-veteran/veteran family participant cost: $100 (bring cash or check to event)

Not recommended for young children.

  • Intro to Business Planning
  • Possibilities for Farming/Ranching with a Disability
  • Financial Funding Sources for Farming/Ranching
  • Marketing Resources
  • Resources to Support Agriculture Business Operation

Cost of Workshop: $25 which includes breakfast, lunch, and workshop materials

Please make sure to wear something comfortable (with closed toe shoes) and warm as we will have some hands-on demonstrations outside in the afternoon.

Cattle AI Workshop @ F.E.A.T. Farm

Description

Join us for a cattle AI workshop in Coryell County (Flat), Texas. This workshop is a one-day workshop designed to provide information about the AI process for cattle and is open to all producers.

Workshop sessions will include:

  • Chute Side Manners (Basic Handling from moving cattle to basic skills like palpation, blood draw, with live AI demonstration) – Presented by Bell County Extension Agent Lyle Zoeller
  • Cattle Nutrition (Maintenance, Breeding, Lactating) – Presented by Purina Nutritionist Jennifer Ramthun
  • Understanding EPD’s

Workshop cost is $25 which includes breakfast, lunch, and drinks.

Please make sure to wear something comfortable (with closed toe shoes) and warm as we will have a couple of Hands On Learning events outdoors in the morning before moving to our afternoon classroom portion.
